Floating Village Outside Siem Reap
The so-called "floating village" is outside Siem Reap on the Tonle Sap Lake. What sounds romantic in nomenclature is really a place of grinding poverty. AlteCocker will remember forever the lady who greeted us (translated by the guide) with the words "You come from far away and I have never been to Angkor Wat." No doubt she has never been off the area of the floating village. The village is on stilts and only appears to "float" in the raining season when the level of the lake increases. The sanitation is pretty well nonexistent. You "go" through a hole in your floor and then bath in the same water where it eventually ends up. Not a pretty place.
