Darwin Australia: Aug. 9-16, 2018 with OUtback Tour
AlteCocker took a tour with Way OutBack Australian Safaris. AlteCocker flew to Darwin from Broome the day before the tour. The flight stopped in Gove in the Northern Territories. Everyone is required to deplane in Gove and wait in the airport for awhile before boarding again. AlteCocker did have time to buy a t-shirt. She spent 2 nights at The Cavenaugh in Darwin, a really dreadful hotel. It is old, run down, has no elevator, and, worst of all, was infested with roaches. She did keep her reservation at The Cavenaugh for one night after the tour as her luggage was stored at the hotel. However, when she returned, she was put in an upstairs room despite having requested ne on the first floor. That was the last straw. AlteCocker switched hotels. Darwin, due to its remoteness is very expensive. It is not a place AlteCocker will visit again unless she gets another home exchange.
AlteCocker had one free day before the National Park tour began and used it to take a tour based on The Bombing of Darwin and World War II in Darwin. You end up at a museum devoted to the subject.
The tour included stops in Litchfield & Kadaku National Parks. There is a lovely waterfall at Litchfield where even somewhat mobility impaired AlteCocker could swim. Wish we had had more time there. Kadaku included an excursion to Jim Jam Falls (last day of the tour). Having been tipped off that it would be a rock climb to get to the Falls, AlteCocker chose to remain at the campground.
There was a boat ride in the Katherine Gorge and AlteCocker paid extra for a helicopter flight.
The tour included plenty of sitings of salt water crocodiles. It did not include a visit to one of those commercial places where the crocodiles "jump' to eat chickens. Fine with AlteCocker.
